Nev's SPL Chat or back to top here
Wanaka 1. V Green Island 0
It was a game of contrasting styles as Green Island looked to impose their long ball game and play
through and off the robust Matt Brazier
while Wanaka looked to play a shorter passing game.
It was Green Island through Brazier who attacked early and Brazier twice
found himself scoring from off side positions in the first 20 mins as Wanaka's
centre back pairing of Al Carmichael and
Thomas VanHees kept a well organised defensive line.

For Wanaka - striker Steve Pleskun and left back Adam Hewson were causing Green Island problems ,
Pleskun forced a save from Christian Firth in the 10th minute then in the 15th minute he blazed over the bar
from a handy position whilst Hewson was making dangerous runs down the left wing but not quite finding that final pass
or shot to finish of the promising moves.
Firth in goal continued delivering long balls to Brazier but Wanaka stood firm matching his physical presence
- something they had failed to do in previous encounters.
As the half wound down it was another jinking run by Hewson that almost broke the deadlock
as he beat players and drove into the penalty box, his cross to the on running Peskun was well read
by Brynn Sinclar who cleared the danger. Into the 2nd half with both teams well matched there are few clear
cut chances to either team in the first 20 mins.
In the 65th minute Firth with a long goal kick finds Brazier ,who flicks onto the run of Liam Carrington
- with Carrington continuing his run into the box and he collides with Wanaka keeper Aaron Molloy .
Green Island appeal for a penalty which is initally given but after a review its over turned.
Wanaka continue to absorb the pressure Green Island are applying from free kicks and corners
and the game looks like it could end in an exciting 0-0 draw. Wanaka bring on substitutes Xion Lippe
and Scott Mitchell in the 75th min for Ethan Arratia and Fletcher Cavanagh who have both had fine games .

Hewson ,Pleskun and Roode all have shots which don't trouble Firth and Molloy makes a couple of great saves
to deny a free kick from Tom Milton and one on one at the feet of Brazier.
Then in the 93rd minute Wanaka take the lead when a long ball from Carmichael is partially cleared
to Scott Mitchell who from the centre circle clips a tantalising ball in behind centre back Blake Porteous,
Firth comes out as Porteous retreats to cover and from the blindside Pleskun nips in between the
two and heads the ball over the advancing Firth into the empty GI goal to put the home side 1-0 up .
Mosgiel 4 v University 1
On a very windy Memorial Park the home side had the tail wind and Mosgiel got their tails up
with the diminutive Cam Anderson dragging an early shot wide. An inswinging Anderson corner
was narrowly headed wide by skipper Rory Findlay on 16minutes.
It was Anderson who created the first goal,
with his through ball to Matt Kelly who from fully 35yards
out looked up and saw Universties custodian
Luke Schaffer-Swan off his line and
his half volley sailed into the roof of the net.

Anderson was heavily involved,
and in the 35th minute with the ball at his feet
he was fouled in the box and he drove the resultant penalty
low and hard to his left.
Right on half time Findlay took the ball down the right wing and with the defence
back pedalling he drifted inside and scored with his left foot into the far corner.
With the 2nd half wind University started to enjoy more time on the ball and the industrious Colin Fagan
was heavily involved . Mosgiel broke out and a raking diagonal ball from the left across the field
split the students defence and Finn Cattaway racing up from right back steered the ball home in
the 56th minute to make it 4.0

University then had its best spell of the match with a flurry of chances
- first Ben Stanleys header was saved by Liam Whittaker , then a free kick was tipped over the bar,
Allan McBride flicked a shot that forced Whittaker into a diving save ,
Stanley then dragged another effort wide.
Dom Scahill finally got one to go in with 67minutes played.
Scahill was denied moments later when from a corner his header was cleared off the line.
Anderson narrowly missed with an attempted chip from 40 yards out that landed onto the
roof of the net and in injury time Scahill agonisingly dragged a last effort wide for the students.
Roslyn Wakari 4 v Northern 0
On a windy Ellis Park both teams Roslyn used the conditions to their favour
while also playing some good shorter play too
- Roslyn settled and were soon peppering Northern's full backs,
looking to get in behind the defence-
Harley Rodeka went close for Roslyn from the edge of the box.

Roslyn then had a flurry of corners
from Luke Clissold 's which Northern dealt with.
However when Shay Thom flicked on Nathan Wilkie's long throw
Clissold drove a volley
from 12 yards out past Alex Van Hessing.
Northern created a couple of half chances
with some neat play forcing a couple of free kicks
around the edge of the box and a cross that wizzed
across the 6 yard box, but weren't able to produce the final product. Curtis Day nearly
doubled Roslyns lead just after half time, hitting the post from 25 yards.

When Roslyns Tennessee Kinghorn was sent off following an altercation the extra man presented Northern
with 2 opportunites to equalise, first through Seamus Grey with a nicely struck volley and then through
Harry Fraser but on both occasions keeper Tom Stevens was equal to it. Roslyn settled and took control
when first Yunny Chang Sung dispossessed a defender and calmly slotted past Van Hessing.
Roslyns Matt Cordelle came off the bench and made it 3-0 following a one on one and
Clissold made it 4-0 with a free kick into the top left hand corner from 30 yards in a final minutes of the game

Caversham 1 v Queenstown Rovers 3
Queenstown travelled to a windy Hancock Park where the winner would claim 5th spot and
Queenstowns match day squad had a lot of youngsters with several of their senior players missing.
Queenstown make a positive with their fullbacks Cohen Nash and Rowan Marsh frequently making
overlapping runs overlapping but don't capitalise. They still continue to dominate the first half and take the lead
when Jan Kumar struck a stunning, swirling free kick from long range past Sean Van Dyk mid way through the first half.
Willem Ebbinge then finds himself vearing down on goal with only Van Dyk in his way but cant keep his shot on target.

Into the 2nd half and Caversham come out stronger, and look to make runs from deep
and get beyond Queenstowns back four.
When Queenstown win the ball back- keeper Daniel Bocatios drives a chest high pass
to Kumar who brings it down on the left,
then plays a delightful ball in behind the full back
for the on rushing Ebbinge who this time makes no mistake
as he coolly steps inside the centre half and passes the ball in the bottom corner to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.
Caversham pulls one back when Kaleb De Groot-Green powers when a corner is whipped in with pace
and then flicked on to De Groot -Green.
Queenstown made sure of the points with five minutes to play when following a sweeping move
which saw the inital shot saved by Van Dyk, Thomas Mills was on hand to smash in from close range.
